A more official blog..

I created a more official blog: http://for.unipi.it/angelo_sajeva/ I posted there only my cv sofar. I still have to figure it out whatelse to post there.. I don't know if I will eventually move all this blog there.. I have to think about it.. it will be sad because I love the name if this blog :! (and furthermore I feel somehow more speech freedom here than in the "official" one..)

ENI07 and PLX ACCESS

Finally! I have the access to both eni07 and plx (in figure) super-computers. On friday I had a day-long phone call to arrange all the setup to become operative: access got, sources compiled, executables run (with testfiles). We still need QC and other stuff.. i.e. compile and test a part of the code that permits to transform standard data in the right input for the code.

Anyway, I work on it only partially, first of all I have to read (and understand) the paper:

Efficient nonlinear Bayesian survey design using DN optimization,

Darrell Coles and Andrew Curtis

Not an easy lecture.. :/

Getting a Supercomputer

Domani ho un contatto con ENI via Skype per avere un account, per me e un altro dottorando, che ci permetta l'accesso da Pisa al Supercomputer del CINECA a Bologna. Eccolo nella lista:

A skype call is scheduled for tomorrow with ENI, to get the access credentials for the CINECA Supercomputer. It is owned by ENI and hosted at CINECA (BO). It is currently rank 87 (updated at nov 2011) in the top500 list of the most powerful worldwide supercomputer.

I'm looking forward to get the access!

Global stochastic research code compiled!

Malcolm Sambridge mi ha dato l'account per avere accesso al suo codice. Oggi l'ho scaricato. E ho provato a compilare la parte sul sampling dello spazio dei modelli. Naturalmente non girava. Ho cambiato i compilatori, ho cambiato le flag di fortran. Dopo un po' di ammattimenti ho capito cosa c'era che non andava: una riga di codice era troppo lunga e andava mandata a capo a metà (usando la sintassi giusta per andare a capo ma continuando la riga) e ora il codice è compilato! ^-^

Today I downloaded and succesfully compiled Malcolm Sambridge, neighbourhood algorithm on a mac os x and on a slackware linux. I am very happy and proud! And still hugely grateful to prof. Malcolm!) Now let's start to dip into the code! ;P

Iniziamo a descrivere brevemente che cos'è la full waveform inversion (come se ce ne fosse bisogno..) E partiamo con un'immagine. Un'immagine che imparerete a conoscere bene se iniziate a lavorare su questo topic: Il modello di Marmousi. Ed eccolo qua nel suo splendore nell'immagine in alto. Il resto è presto detto: nell'immagine al centro c'è il punto di inizio (input) della full waveform inversion e nell'immagine in fondo c'è il punto di arrivo (output) della full waveform inversion. L'idea di cosa viene fatto è abbastanza chiara: partendo da un dato che ha già la struttura di velocità di grande scala definita, la fwi definisce i particolari di risoluzione più fine (piccole lunghezze d'onda, discontinuità, fagliette).

Malcolm mi ha dato l'accesso per scaricare il suo codice. Stavo per mettermi a correre nudo per il parco. Ho risolvendo camminando per 10 minuti con il sorriso ebete e poi buttandomi sul prato. Devo tradurlo in inglese.

ps: Il cellulare è rimasto sul prato. Dopo mezz'ora me ne sono accorto e c'era ancora. Un buon segno!

First day of life

Ciao a tutti, sono un dottorando italiano e questo è il mio tentativo di fare un blog sul mio argomento di ricerca: la full waveform inversion. Da qui il titolo "fullwaveimmersion" del blog, perchè sarà una letterale immersione in questo argomento vastissimo! (nel titolo ho omesso "form" perchè suonava male). Questo blog deve ancora nascere, strada facendo cercherò di capire a cosa può servire!! Spero di avere un seguito!

Hello readers, I am a PhD student in an Italian University (I like to keep myself anonymous just because it is fun! guess who am I?). My research topic is: full waveform inversion. That's the reason of the blog title "fullwaveimmersion". Because I will literally dip into this huge topic ( I omitted "form" in the title, as a poetic license!). This blog is a newborn, so it means diapers for some times, but then we will start to talk, and it will be fun!
